Asc it has come to my attention that Somalis will dress up in hido iyo daqan but will flaunt gold they bought in DUBAI??? That cannot be even Afars proudly wear their traditionally jewelry.
I’ve been looking the web and talking to my granny and have come back with SOURCES AND MY GRANDMOTHERS WISDOM!! Alx I found a book detailing Somali traditional jewelry you can all check out here! It’s in Italian and English and has everything from Anklets to chokers:
Essentially gold was more used by rich costal dwelling folk while silver and amber was popular among nomads. Benadari’s especially refused to wear silver and wore gold almost exclusively. Beauty items like combs and indha kool containers tended to be silver though. Men never wore gold because it was haram and mashallah they were observant muslims. However the ideas of amulets or xirsiis were VERY common and they could range from being made of leather to being made from silver or gold.
