Teff grows well in arid regions like many of Somaliland. It is a good substitute for wheat, is gluten free and high In protein. Teff also has small seeds meaning a small amount will be able to cover a huge area.

We could sponsor farmers to grow this useful crop and use it as a staple in our foods.

Here is my thread explaining why we should grow Teff in Somaliland. One thing I never mentioned is the fact that Teff could be stored for a long time and in times of famine could be used to cook any food. :oday4:

Great idea. This would help with food self sufficiency as well as having something to export.

But I think projects like this require govt assistance to thrive. Injection of money, plus protecting farmers/business people from corruption.
Also for irrigation, here's a plan to make the nugaal rivers permanent

"To reduce drought and desertification in somaliland we must do a few things.

1. Plant trees in the Sheikh, Daallo and Cal Madow mountains. This will pump more water into the Togdheer and nugaal rivers making them permanent.

2. Build a canal from the Ethiopian highlands to the nugaal river tributaries near the border allowing an alternative route and pumping more water into the nugaal river.

3. Educating nomads on the dangers of overgrazing and offering incentives to plant trees where their animals graze.

4. Setting aside land dedicated to soil repair and regreening. We Somalis are fortunate that majority of our lands are mostly arid (dry) and not a desert making repleshing the soil easy.

5. Pray to Allah to bless us with more rain.

We could try to make these rivers permanent.

We could gain 4 main benefits if we made the Toghdeer/Nugaal river permanent with the help of planting trees in the sheikh mountains. The first benefit is that Toghdeer/Sool would become more fertile. 2. We maybe even could build a dam on the Toghdeer river, so that we can produce electricity for our own use and even export it to neighbouring countries(Djibouti, Somalia). 4. Plus we could solve the water problem in the Toghdeer/Sool region. Furthermore, Somaliland could gain more political power against their eastern neighbours.
